![]() ![]() I had zero interest in my father’s war experience-and that was fine with him. He just told some funny stories and-more or less un-discussed-kept an old Japanese rifle hanging from a peg over his writing desk. They can watch a hundred documentaries on it, and they can talk about it for hours. Now a whole generation of middle-aged men cannot get enough of World War II. But certainly there was history, day after day of it. There were no poets or philosophers on those ships, or maybe there were only poets and philosophers. Soon enough, my teenage father was in Officer Candidate School, and then he was on a destroyer in the Pacific. The next morning-Monday, December 8-virtually every man in that college walked into town, chose a branch of the armed services, and enlisted. News of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor arrived on a Sunday afternoon in December. Those students knew that the world was rumbling around them, but they were in a New England college studying the poets and philosophers, and it was easy to imagine that the world was far away. He thought he was finally free, but history found him. This was a long, long time ago, the freshman year of Thomas Flanagan. This was in the old days, when you sent your laundry home to your mother, wore a jacket and tie to class, attended compulsory Protestant chapel, and did anything else the dean of students told you to do. He was finally free of the repressive Catholicism he’d grown up with, he was surrounded by free thinkers, and he was at last in a place where his great talent-writing-was valued above all others. He was a new student at Amherst College, and he thought it was paradise. History also found my father when he was in college, although he was a freshman, not a senior. That part of your life had ended, and you never got to say goodbye to it. As your long, strange spring break was extended week after week, the truth began to settle in: You were never going back to college. Why not?Īn event that will change the way we live was sweeping around the globe, and it found you. No matter how many graduations I attend-and no matter how much of a hassle it is to get a parking space and catch the shuttle bus and find a seat-when the line of graduates finally appears and begins that last, long walk as college students, I feel like I might cry.īut you won’t get to have this very special event, four years in the making. We want the day to be distinct, unmistakable, and linked to countless ceremonies of the past. ![]() And for many decades we have celebrated it in the same formal way-with pomp, circumstance and a lexicon of special terms- academic regalia processing down the aisle conferring of degrees. ![]() A college graduation is a big deal it’s important. With losses on that order, it might seem frivolous to feel sad about losing your graduation ceremonies. Many of you, I know, have suffered these things too. Others have lost their jobs, their savings, their plans for the future. People have lost their lives, and families are grieving. This has been a season of terrible losses. Isn’t there supposed to be some sheet cake involved? Not this year, I guess. Find the collection here.Īs I stand here on this glorious spring morning, wearing my day pajamas and staring out the window at my garbage cans, I can’t help thinking something’s wrong. Rick’s Bait and Tackle reported that Josiah Powalski had a 22.5-inch flounder and Bruce Hambrick had a 23.5-inch flounder, both caught on minnows at Massey’s Ditch. He was using a 6th Sense Quake lure from Henlopen Tackle. In freshwater, Johnathan Stoddard caught an 8-pound, 2-ounch largemouth bass at the head of the Broadkill River in Milton. The Savannah Lynn had 54 sea bass and two flounder last Friday. The Captain Ike had a limit of flounder to 7 pounds. The No Limit caught a limit of flounder plus some sea bass on Sunday. The good news is the flounder action at the Old Grounds continues to produce limit catches when the wind and current allow good drifting conditions. If I catch a 20- to 25-inch striper, that’s fine if not, well, that’s OK too. I will go to the Outer Wall or work the canal or Broadkill River early in the morning, but not that early. The big question is, do you want to catch a 20- to 25-inch striper bad enough to get up well before dawn, run out in the dark and maybe or maybe not actually catch a slot fish? My answer is not really. My guess would be the pier fishermen at Cape Henlopen don’t have a trolley line and fish their spot on a fish-finder rig or perhaps under a bobber. The bait will swim at or just below the surface until a king, or a tarpon or a big shark eats it. There, they catch bait, usually a bluefish, then put it out on a trolley line that has been cast as far out a possible. Sounds a lot like the king mackerel fishery from the piers down south. I am not sure of the tackle they use, but I understand this is an early-morning fishery. My recent reports from Breakwater Tackle on the fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park indicate there are some anglers fishing live spot from the pier and catching large stripers. Fishing live eels at the Savannah Road Bridge has produced stripers in the past. I would work the banks up and down both sides of the canal and the Broadkill River with the same WindCheater plug. This style hook should set in the corner of the mouth and result in an easy release of over- or under-slot fish.Īnother location that might hold slot stripers is the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. If you choose to use live bait, you must use a non-offset circle hook. You might also try a surface lure, a bucktail with a Gulp! trailer or a live spot. I would cast a Rebel WindCheater as close to the rocks as possible, let it rest for a few seconds, then crank it back to the boat with a steady retrieve. The closer to sunrise you get there, the better. If you are going to target stripers in the 20- to 25-inch slot, I would suggest getting an early start and heading to the Outer Wall. ![]() While you may catch most of a certain species under certain conditions, that does not mean they won’t show up under completely different conditions and at completely different locations. When it comes to fishing there are very few, if any, hard-and-fast rules outside of safety. That experience taught me an important lesson. In those days, I would have killed for a 10-pound striper. ![]() I watched in fascination as a 10-pound striper rose from the depths and very quietly ate that plug. One very hot August afternoon, I was walking back from the beach to our tent on the southside when I saw a young man casting a plug under the bridge during dead slack current. I recall shortly after I began fishing for stripers at night at Indian River Inlet in the mid-1960s, I was convinced they only fed during the dark on a hard-running current. Striped bass, as a general rule, feed during periods of low light. In the Cape Region, the best bet for finding a striper in that slot is going to be along one of the walls out in the bay, along the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal or the Broadkill River, and possibly from the fishing pier at Cape Henlopen State Park. Anglers are allowed one striped bass between 20 and 25 inches per day during this time period within these confines. Delaware has a summer striped bass season that covers the Delaware Bay and its tributaries from July 1 until Aug. ![]() ![]() ![]() What is Feng Shui Customised Money Board Painting?.Meaning of Mental and Physical Clutter in Feng Sh.Selection of Right Shape of Clocks in feng Shui/W.Best Placement of Mobile Phone, Laptop, Printer, F.Important Increasing Knowledge Feng Shui Cure Sett.Where to Have a Temple in Feng Shui- Where to Plac. The Strength of Great Apes and the Speed of Humans. As a result, chimps often end up using more muscle than they need." So using a muscle becomes more of an all-or-nothing proposition for chimps. On the other hand, since chimps have fewer motor neurons, each neuron triggers a higher number of muscle fibers. We can engage just a few muscle fibers for delicate tasks like threading a needle, and progressively more for tasks that require more force. Our surplus motor neurons allow us to engage smaller portions of our muscles at any given time. Spinal grey matter contains large numbers of motor neuronsnerves cells that connect to muscle fibers and regulate muscle movement. MacLarnon showed that, relative to body mass, chimps have much less grey matter in their spinal cords than humans have. Walker's hypothesis stems partly from a finding by primatologist Ann MacLarnon. This indication is subject to ON or OFF selection by the navigator, therefore, for an unfamiliar user the risk is increasing. The typical marks of A1, A2, B, C have now been replaced by symbol which indicates the accuracy of depth. On ENCs the same policy is followed with the exception of the indication of accuracy which is well spread and marked on the chart with CATZOCs (Categories of zone of confidence). Navigators should carefully check the areas that they have chosen to sail, find the relevant indication on diagram and apply additional measures or safety features to protect the vessel from grounding. On the traditional paper charts, the Reliability Diagram (old charts) or Zone of Confidence diagram (new charts) indicate the depth accuracy based on surveys. However, a mariner should be always wary of any chart that does not feature these indicators, irrespective of whether it is a traditional paper chart, or an ENC. This is why many guides are available with best practices of navigation for commercial vessels and cruising yachts that help mariners to decide on how much confidence they should show on the marked depths. Specifically, the depth measurement, as indicated, is the result of a relevant depth survey which varies in age and quality depending on the measurement techniques and the available technology.īecause priority for surveying is given to the major shipping routes, each navigator sailing into unfamiliar waters away from these routes should be able to interpret the various quality indicators that are, or should be, indicated on every chart. ![]() The ‘navigational waters’ can be mainly affected by the water depth, which is indicated both on paper charts and ENCs. Can they steer the vessel, following a pre scheduled passage plan, within the safety margins that they set, from berth to berth, avoiding grounding? At this point, it is worth to mention the passage plan’s main purpose which is to use the available ‘navigational waters’ for the indented voyage so that the vessel could safely conduct the voyage. However, the question for the navigating officers remains the same. Industry stakeholders have discussed a lot about the pros and cons of paperless navigation concluding that ECDIS does have an edge over the traditional paper chart navigation. ![]() |
